You may be aware that Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water is currently looking at improving the wastewater network in your area. The background to this is that the septic tank at ‘Woodview’, for which we have responsibility, has been deemed by the Environment Agency to be polluting, which could have an effect on groundwater in the area. This problematic situation will need to be resolved in order to comply with the relevant standard, which in this case is the EU Groundwater Directive.
The current septic tank operates with the final discharge of effluent via a soakaway system to local ground. Investigations in the area have indicated a layer of permeable ground through which water could flow into local groundwater abstraction points. The continued operation of a septic tank arrangement is therefore unsuitable.
Our team of expert designers have examined the design solutions that are possible to resolve the problem. They believe the most effective way of dealing with this issue will be to collect and transfer the waste water to the nearest existing pumping station at Western Under Penyard.
This solution will involve constructing a new gravity sewer in Hoovers Lane, Pontshill to run from a new manhole outside 1 – 4 Woodview to the junction of Bartwood Lane. We would also need to construct a new underground pumping station in the field opposite Penheligan House and Marsh Cottage, with a new underground pipe line crossing the field towards Western Under Penyard.
The new pumping station has been designed to minimise its visual impact to the local area as much as possible. The design includes a new wooden farm gate into the field, modifications to the existing wall to match the existing finish, a number of small underground chambers with the only above ground structures being two concrete base slabs. A grasscrete road would lead to two small roadside green kiosks, which would be backed up against the existing wall with the majority of the construction being hidden from view behind the wall. A wooden timber post and bar fence has been chosen to protect these assets which will fit in with the natural surroundings as much as possible.
The position of the new pumping station was chosen as being the lowest accessible point outside the flood plane to which the waste water can gravitate before being transferred to Western Under Penyard, which is essential for the operation of the proposed system. We are currently seeking planning permission for this proposal.
The design of this system would allow for future connections from other properties in the area, should they be required at a later date.
This scheme is being evaluated by our contract partners, Imtech Process Ltd. If you do have any queries regarding this work, you can reach us on 0800 085 3968.

Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water works to give you the best quality water services. To ensure we continue to meet our very high standards we need to do some work on the mains water supply to your area.
We need to upgrade the water pipe through Llancynfelyn and also, at the same time through Llandre and Glanwern, Borth. Both schemes are due to start the week beginning 30 January, taking approximately 13 weeks and 16 weeks to complete, respectively.
In Llancynfelyn, on the B4353, we will be upgrading 3.9 kilometres of pipes and in order to carry out this work safely and quickly, we will need to use two way traffic lights for its duration.
A further 2.5 kilometres of water pipe will also be laid on the B4353 through Llandre and Glanwern, Borth. The majority of this work will also be carried out using two way traffic lights. However, there are sections along this route where the road may be too narrow to allow traffic to safely pass while we work and these sections will require a road closure.
To minimise disruption to road users, we will only carry out work on these sections on weekends when it is necessary for us to do so. The diversionary route will be clearly sign posted. Should it not be necessary for us to close the road on a weekend, our signage will state that the road will remain open for that weekend.
We have been working closely with Ceredigion Highways department planning both these schemes.
During this time you may experience a slight interruption to your water supply whilst we reconnect you to the new pipe, this is usually for no longer than 30 minutes. If we have to interrupt your water supply for longer than 4 hours, we’ll put a warning card through your door, giving you 48 hours advance notice.

We need to upgrade 3.1 kilometres of water pipes through Lydstep.
This work will be carried out in 3 phases with approximately 1 kilometre of pipe being laid in each phase.
• Phase 1 has already commenced at the junction of the B4585 and the A4139 next to Baldwin’s Moor. We are replacing the water mains pipe through Lydstep village, to just beyond Lydstep Home Farm.
• Phase 2 involves replacing the water pipe on the A4139 from the holiday village to the junction past Bubbleton.
• Phase 3 will continue to follow the A4139 from the Crackwell Country Club to just beyond the junction of Giltar Way in Penally East End.
Each phase follows on from the last.
Much of the work will be carried out in the verge, however there will be places along the route where the pipe is in the highway and has to be replaced there.
We have been working closely with Pembrokeshire Highways department when planning this work and, to enable us to carry out this work safely and quickly, we will need to use two or three way traffic lights as appropriate when we are working in the highway.
We have programmed work to avoid the busy summer period, however this is essential work and it must now be completed.
The phases will take approximately 6 months to complete and will be carried out by our contract partners; Young Bros Ltd.
We understand that our work causes inconvenience, but we always try to keep disruption to a minimum.
If you do have any queries regarding this scheme you can contact us on 0800 052 0130.

We will be working on your local wastewater network, Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water works to give you the best quality water and wastewater services.
To ensure we meet our very high standards we need to carry out essential work on the wastewater pipe in the Maerdy area.
Whilst we are doing this work there will be no impact on your water or wastewater services but we want to let you know what you can expect while we are working in the area.
The work will involve replacing 1050 metres of wastewater pipe, most of which will take place within the park land next to the Rhondda Fach River.
We have been working with Rhondda Cynon Taf Council to minimise the impact on the use of this area during our work, but it will be necessary to close some sections of footpath while we work for safety reasons.
In order to carry out this work as quickly as possible, work will start at three separate points along the route.
The route follows the old railway line in the land to the rear of Station Road Maerdy and continues alongside the old railway line to Avon Street in Ferndale.
We are due to start work the week of 5th September and will take approximately six months to complete the scheme.
Residents of Elm Street and Avon Street in Ferndale may notice an increase in works traffic during the course of this scheme, for which we apologise.
This work will be carried out by our contract partner: Morgan Sindall.
Our normal working hours will be from 8am until 6pm, Monday to Friday.
It is unlikely that we will need to enter your home, but if we do we will show you an identity badge.
If you are at all concerned you can call us to check the identity of the caller on 0800 281 141.
We understand that our work can be inconvenient, but it is essential to protect and upgrade your wastewater system.
We will, of course, try to keep any inconvenience to a minimum, and we wish to say thank you for bearing with us while we carry out this important work.
