Students

Students are billed for the time they are tenants of a property. For example if you sign a tenancy agreement from 1st July, we will bill you from 1st July.

The way in which we bill will vary between properties with a meter and those without a meter:

  • Metered properties, we will bill you based on the water you use, measured in cubic metres, plus a fixed charge based on the size of meter at the property. Find out more information about our metered charges. If no water is used then only the fixed charges will apply.
  • We will bill unmeasured properties from the date your tenancy starts to 31st March. From 1st April a new bill will be issued for the next 12 months for which you are responsible until you move out.

You may receive a bill from the 1st April to the 31st March of the following year - but you are due to move out in July. Don’t worry, if you pay the bill in full, when your account is closed down the credit can either be transferred to your new account or refunded via cheque. If you pay on an arrangement, then you will need to continue to pay as normal and inform us when you move out so we can stop the charges.

When to let us know you've moved...

If you have a water meter:

  • Let us know on or after the day you move.
  • Remember to take a final or opening reading on the day you move. We can then bill you for what you have used whilst you were responsible.
  • If you are unable to take a reading yourself, please let us know 10 working days before you move. We can then arrange for a meter reader to visit on the day you move, to take a reading on your behalf.

If you do not have a water meter:

  • You can let us know up to 14 days before you move house.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who needs to be responsible for the bill

If you are responsible for paying the bill, as per your tenancy agreement, then any two tenants can be the primary names on the account. Other tenants who live there can be noted on the account and have authorisation to make changes.

If we are provided the information from the landlord, the first 2 names provided are added to the account.

When do I need to let you know we're moving?

If you are responsible for your account, this will depend on whether your property has a water meter or not.

If your property has a water meter, you can only let us know on the day or after you move and we do require a water meter reading to close the account with. If you’re unable to provide a meter reading then your account will be closed using an estimated reading.

If your property does not have a water meter, you can let us know up to 21 days in advance of your move.

You can let us know you are moving by using our online form.

What happens if I don't pay my bill?

Unmeasured accounts:
Once the account is registered, the bill becomes payable within 14 days unless a payment arrangement is set up. If the payment is not made or you do not pay your instalment on time, we will send reminder letters to the property. If a balance is unpaid, we can pass the account over to a Debt Collection Agency who will control the account until further notice. We do report information to Credit Reference Agencies and any late or missed payments will be recorded on your credit file and can result in a default.

Measured accounts:

Once the account is registered, there will be a zero balance on the account. If a payment arrangement is not set up at registration, the bill becomes payable upon receipt. We’ll read your meter every 6 months and a bill will be issued. If the payment is not made or you do not pay your instalment on time, we will send reminder letters to the property. If a balance is unpaid, we may pass the account over to a Debt Collection Agency who will control the account until further notice. We do report information to Credit Reference Agencies and any late or missed payments will be recorded on your credit file and can result in a default.
