Dwr Cymru Welsh Water

The Water Industry Approved Plumbers’ Scheme (WIAPS) is run by the Water Regulations Advisory Scheme (WRAS) on behalf of a number of water companies. This is one of the seven existing approved contractors’ schemes in the UK. Not all plumbing businesses registered with WIAPS have signed up to WaterSafe, so WIAPS may have additional qualified plumbers near you. Further information regarding WIAPS and how plumbers can become registered can be found on the WRAS website here. This website also includes a list of ground workers who are qualified to undertake work on outside water services only and other specialist workers who work within designated sectors.

If you are not an approved plumber or plumbing company we would advise that you obtain copies of the regulations, any amendments, and relevant guidance documents on the water regulations supplied by the Government or by WRAS, to help ensure that you are working in a way that complies with the regulations.

It should be noted that in terms of plumbing fixtures, fittings and appliances, it is not illegal to sell unsuitable items, but depending how they are used in plumbing and installations, that could be deemed illegal. Suitable fittings and materials are shown on WRAS’ website https://www.wras.co.uk/approvals/ (also see the ‘General Information and Advice’ Section) which cover their properties and installation details. An approved plumber or company should be aware of this and actively consulting WRAS’ website for this information to ensure the correct fittings and materials are being used and installed as prescribed.
